Wengen Lauterbrunnen

Wengen is a modern, excellently equipped and pretty popular ski resort in the Bernese Oberland, offering good accommodation variety - around thirty hotels, 500 apartments and chalets for rent. The resort is situated high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley at 1248 meters elevation, on twenty-six km from Interlaken and only five km from Mürren and has some great views of Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger.
The renowned International Lauberhorn Ski Race was established in Wengen in 1830s. At that time the resort was a farm community and the British were the first to popularize the Wengen as a holiday resort. The main streets are dotted with cosy cafes, restaurants and shops, but no cars are allowed in Wengen!

From Wengen one can choose from a  number of excursion trips around the Lauterbrunnen Valley. A great trip one can take is to Trümmelbach Falls, which plunges in 5 majestic cascades through the gorge. There is an elevator embeded in the rock to a series of galleries, the last stop of which is at a wall where the upper fall descends. The falls can be visited from the end of May till October daily at various hours. It takes less then an hour to reach the falls on foot, but there is also a postal bus from Lauterbrunnen (fifteen min. from Wengen by train), which stops at Trümmelbach Falls.

Another worth visit is to the base of the Staubbach Waterfall, plunging almost three hundred meters in a sheer drop over a rock wall. Staubbach can be easily reached again from Lauterbrunnen, from which center one should follow the signposts along a walkway running along a brook and then continue by some steep stairs to reach the viewing point for the waterfalls.
