Arosa

Arosa is located only 30 kilometers east of Chur and is among the highest alpine resorts. It is situated 1 800 meters above the sea level above the Schanfigg Valley. Arosa is yet another popular resort in the Grisons (as well as Davos and St. Moritz) and it mainly consists of one main street, called Poststrasse with many shops and hotels. Some places in the resorts are from the 14th century, but as a whole is has quite a modern appearance. Another good thing is that Arosa is not only for the wealthy people like Saint Moritz and you can go to a dinner even with a ski jacket. The resort also attracts mostly families as there are many children facilities like kindergartens for example.

Arosa Switzerland

Of course skiing is the most popular sport in Arosa, but it offers other winter sports as well as summer activities. One can, for example, ride on a horse-drawn sleigh on the Arlenwald road. Also available are tobogganing, tennis, bowling and golf (the last three can be played throughout the whole year indoors). There are also very well-kept hiking trails (over 60 kilometers as a whole), maintained even in winter. From June till October you can also take a guided walk in the area. The interesting places in the village itself include a chapel from the 15th century, a museum and a cheese maker.

As far as skiing is concerned, Arosa has a total of 64 kilometers of ski tracks – some of the most perfect in the Grisons. There is also one of the finest ski schools in the country – the Swiss Ski School with over 100 instructors.
One of the most famous skiing places in the Obersee area, near Arosa is the Weisshorn, at 2 611 meters elevation. You can reach it by cable car, passing through Larn Mittle (1 992 meters elevation), from where you can view the whole Arosa. From the Weisshorn you can see one of the most amazing views of the Grison Alps and eastern Switzerland. Also in a clear weather you can see Chur and the Calanda mountain top.
One can also use the Hörnli gondola in order to reach Hörnligrat (2 454 meters elevation) for only 15 minutes. From there you can take different lifts to other good ski tracks.
You can take ski lessons in the Swiss Ski School (also for children) or you can take private instructions in the Grison Association of Private Ski Instructors Arosa.
The ski slopes around Arosa are suitable for all difficulty levels and can be reached by more than 16 cable cars, plus chairlifts and even buses. You can get a ski pass for 5 or 7 days and even get a pass for the distant slopes of Davos, Klosters, Flims, and Lax.

In Arosa one can also practice horseback riding. The stables are located at Fuhrhalterei, Wierhof and are open all year round. You can also lend a horse from the Ritsch family and it will surely take you on a picturesque ride in the area. Don’t forget to call them in advance to make the arrangement. Their stables are located near the centre, next to a campground.

Arosa Transportation

Unlimited travel through Switzerland

By train you can easily reach Arosa from Chur and the trip takes about an hour. From Zurich you can reach it in about three hours. By plane you should travel to Zurich – it is the closest airport to Arosa. By car you should drive slowly from Chur to Arosa – although the distance is short, the road is very steep and curvy. If the road is icy you’d better take the gauge railway.

Visitor Information
Through the centre of the town passes the main street – Poststrasse. There are hotels and hotel directions on the street, as well as the local tourist office. It is open the whole day during the week and only in the morning during the weekend.

Getting Around
During the night you cannot enter the centre of Arosa with a car. You can only use a taxi or the Night Express which passes through the centre and the parking lots in the periphery of the resort. The Night Express is available from December till April and is actually a minivan with scheduled stops. It will also stop if you wave or want to get down anywhere across its route.

For flights, trains and car-rental reservations as well as for buses, coaches and taxi ski transfers refer to the general Switzerland Transportation page!
